Some Inspiration Before Teslacon

It's been a long and busy steampunk summer here in Madtown.  Making the push to get a few last projects done before Teslacon.  I've also agreed to help run a steampunk event in Montello, WI next year.  The event is Cog County Faire and will be held May 30th to June 1st, 2014.  So I'm also starting to work on the steampunk themed carnival games that we will have at the event.   Oh yes, there will be carnival games, this I vow.

So for all of you still feverishly working away on projects for Teslacon or for other steampunk events coming up, here's a few finished projects to provide some inspiration.

The astute observer will now doubt notice that this little guy is heavily influenced by the Girl Genius Comic.  For those of you that don't know about Girl Genius, I cannot recommend it highly enough.  It is, in my opinion, the best steampunk web-comic out there; although the authors, Phil and Kaja Foglio, refer to it as Gaslamp Fantasy (Adventure, Romance, MAD SCIENCE!)

The camera flash washes it out a bit, but the eye does light up blue when the switch on his top is turned on.
Here he is with his wrench accessory.  I mean what's a little clank without the ability to take things apart?

Here's my latest take on a whimsical walking stick.  Yes, it does have a teacup hanging from it.  You never know when you might need to take a spot of tea when out for a stroll.  I'm actually surprised they aren't standard issue on all canes.

Here's the last inspiration piece for tonight. Ladies and Gentlemen I give you:
Filbert Von Numnutz

So... sometimes I'll have a request for a steampunk piece that takes me a while to figure out "how the heck am I going to make this?"  Filbert the clockwork squirrel was one of those pieces.  I finally stumbled across a squirrel nutcracker at a local kitchen supply store and knew I had my main component for this project.  The vest and top hat are made of leather.  The base is waxed hardened leather that allows it to be worn as a shoulder piece.  Typically the nutcrackers are silver-ish/aluminum in color, but my buddy Jeff at Grey Cat Armory was able to powder coat it brass for me.

For those interested I am giving a basic leather working class at Teslacon this year, where I will give step-by-step directions on how to make wax hardened leather items. As far as I know the class will be on Sunday of the convention, but check the official schedule once it is published.

That's all for now
